January 3rd 2011

I can't believe that he turned 21! Time flies by so quickly...and Adelyn just turned 2. Where does the time go? I bet that it is so true that being on a mission is amazing and that it is wonderful to help and serve people. I can't wait till I have the opportunity to serve on one. A lot of people question why we choose to go on missions and why if we do go, if our time wouldn't be better spent spending time in Africa or Haiti or other places helping people in need. The thing is, when we go on missions we are helping people. The gospel is the biggest source of peace in my life; knowing that I have a father in heaven and a older brother who loves me and everyone else so much that He died for me. Knowing that I can be sealed to my family to live with them for time and all eternity is the best. So if the gospel is so important to me, why wouldn't I want to try and spread that peace to others? People think that the only way to give help would be to give money for houses or clothes, and those things are extremely important, but they lack an eternal perspective. Also, while our missions are proselyting missions, our missionaries do a great deal of service and they love to help the people they are serving around.

I am now in Mexicali!!!!!!! The ride here was long but beautiful and went through a beautiful mountain range called the Ramarosa. And it gave me a lot of time to think. Since I turned 21 yesterday it was great having a little more reflection time. I thought about a lot of things like what to do for a career and life after my mission. Then I put myself to thinking about missionary work and how wonderful it is to be a missionary and to help people. I've truly realized the mission is a lot different than I ever thought but it pulls out all the strengths and faults in uno and that is amazing.
I am pumped for this new sector. It is called Villas del Rey and it is amazing. My companion's name is Elder Gutierrez and he is from the state of Mexico. We will be having fun and working hard. I am also so excited because... I am going to have Hermanas in my district!!! I have always wanted that, especially because it reminds me of Becca.

As for the BD package, I haven't gotten anything, but should this week. I am actually thinking about trying to fix the old camera and give it to a member in San Quintin who has always wanted one and is by far one of the best members I have ever met in my entire life. I am not sure how much it will cost but from what some people have said it should be between 50 and 60 dollars, if you think it would be a good idea please send the money, if not don't worry about it.

We had New Years off. As for my birthday, it was fun. I cooked a cake in a member's house, a member cooked me a cake and I made cookies at another member's house. My dinner meal turned out to be fish tacos. As for crazy stories, I have the conversion story of Karina, my one convert from san quintin. I will send a hard copy soon. She is a golden convert.

As for other news...there isn't really any...let me think...no, I am sure that is everything.

Hey I love you all and wanted to wish Adelyn a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and to all A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Con Amor,
Elder Baria
P.S.-I did share the ties, and I like them a lot.

It was really great talking to him even though it was very short. We had a very interesting experience trying to three way call :) Skype calling will be really fun and cool! He always asks for a lot of ties. Can you imagine living in a house made of cardboard and sticks? That would be so awful. I'm grateful that both of my parents have stable jobs that keep a solid roof over my head.

Great hearing from you all. Here is some fun news from after the phone call. The mission department approved Skype video calls for missionaries. So all the secretaries (part of our zone) went to the offices and video talked with their families for Christmas. I think I am totally game for that for the next call.
So a few stories. I already told you about the baptism of Karia whose photo I am including. We did also do a hospital visit where we gave away toys and treats to the kids for Christmas. That was a tender experience. On Chrsitmas we went around and visited members that the branch president asked us to visit, and almost all of them gave us tomales and posole. The fun thing though was sharing a quick message with them and seeing the joy it brought into their eyes.
Another fun story, a sister's house made out of cardboard and sticks had the roof blow off and we put a tarp up on it while it was raining and windy. We were soaked and covered with mud and took a picture right when we got back. OK, as for the birthday package, I would love a really nice camera that takes great pictures without blurs. I am not sure if that means high megapixels or what and also one that has a recharagable battery instead of double aa's and the slimer the better.
The elders want mountain dew, candy and we would all love sweet ties.
I love you all so much,
Take Care,
Elder Baria

There is a little gap between his last e-mail and this one, but this is all I have. At this point, Liz and Jake were married. It was a beautiful ceremony and a wonderful night. Love you both! I bet it would be cool to be baptized in the beach and the dolphins would be really awesome to see. Just another witness of God's wonderful plan and design.

OK entonces, para empezar, ustedes van a markar a la casa del Presidente de Rama a las 7 de la tarde. Su numero de casa es 001-616-166-8940. From what I understand that should be enough. The call will be between 30-45 minutes and my companion's family will be calling him at 8 so will also be very excited.
And Liz and Jake Felicidades!!!!!!!!! ya voy a tener otro cuñado.
(OK then, to begin with, you will mark to the house of the President of Rama at 7 pm. His home number is 001-616-166-8940. From What I Understand That Should Be Enough. My companion and I had a baptism this week. Her name is Flor Karina Reyes Rodriguez. She has been a golden investigator from the beginning. We talked to her the first time whill getting off a bus. I started talking to her about prophets and that peaked her interest. She gave us her address and for the next few days we tried knocking on the door but no repsonse. She later told us the she saw us pass by once and tried whistling to us and then following after us but she saw us speaking to another person and decided not to approach. After a few more days we felt the urge to try looking for her one more time and this time she came to the door and we taught her the Restoration and invited her to be baptized. She accepted. In following visits she read the Book of Mormon and described to us in detailed memory what happened, and actually started reading all the scripture references she could. She was convinced the Book of Mormon was true and already had her conversion. We taught her with members and she accepted everything and liked the church. Her baptism was was amazing as the members went and after her baptism we ate cake on the beach, sacamos almejas and some members tried fishing and playing footbal. At the moment of her baptism I remember seeing dolphins swimming in the background which added to the special event. It was also the day of the wedding. She was confirmed on Sunday and is going strong and knows the church is true. I will send pics.
Got to go,
Love Elder Baria
Talk to you all soon

November 22nd 2010

He thoughtfully put each thing into categories. Sounds like they got a nice little treat. I like the weekly surprise. It makes me extremely grateful for how I am blessed. I live in a free country and enjoy everyday things that some people have never even experienced. This goes to show that we shouldn't take things for granted. In regards to what I expect of him when he gets home, nothing in particular. I want him to have grown and learned and strengthened his testimony, but its up to him. I will love him no matter what. Not that I'm worried he wouldn't have become stronger, I'm sure he has.

Weekly Report-Changes I am still here in San Quintin but my companion now is in Tijuana and I will be training this change!!!!!

Weekly Story-On Monday and Tuesday we were up in Ensenada enjoying a Zone Conference with the mission President and went to Costco and Carls Jr and then a four and a half hour ride back.

Weekly Weirdy-An ex missionary came back to make his wedding plans with his convert and he was the one that gave us a ride to Ensenada.

Weekly Wonder-When we got to church we had no investigators there and I was pretty disappointed. My companion was standing by the door when at the end of the Sacrament Meeting prayer a man knocked on the door asking if this was the Mormon church. He asked my companion for a pamphlet and my companion asked him to join the service. He was surprised that he could join that easily. He entered and I presented him to part of the Ward Council and then he went into his class. He told me that he read a book that spoke about Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and had the curiosity to learn a little more and decided to come to church.

Weekly Surprise-There are members here who have never used the internet.

Weekly Question-What kind of end result are you expecting of me from the mission?

Weekly Pedida-Please send me the recipe for chicken divan and lots of different cookies recipes, as I will want to cook for people for Christmas. I will be having another trainee so feel free to send crazy stuff to my kid. I will send a more complete list next week.

Till Next Week,

Love Elder Baria

November 8th 2010

That's a pretty crazy story and must be really exciting for any missionary. Because of modern-day technology, we have actually been able to look at where he is staying which is really cool. Our dad really likes it :)

A crazy miracle from this week is that at the baptism of the other Elders. A friend showed up of the person that was to be baptized. He showed up in white clothes, sandals, and had a change of clothes and told us he wanted to be baptized. That was a wonderful miracle.

As for the week, we came up with some activities to do with the branch, a service project, and an activity where the whole branch will contact the people in the swap meets. We also planned a mini MTC where an ex missionary marriage will be and the President and wife and will train everyone and then they will work as missionaries for a day. Then the mission president will come and give a charla foganera.

As for Halloween, around here it was so far from the border that the day was pretty much a bunch of kids wreaking havoc. Dia de los Muertos it is a good tradition with a lot of crazy little things. Lots of houses put up a sort of altar thing with a picture velas and food that the person liked and dedicate the day to the dead. As for the church here, the construction on the chapel should begin soon. The President of the mision explained to me that he wants to divide the branch. With two branches the church can form a district and with five branches in the district the district can become a stake. It is awesome knowing that I am playing some sort of small part in that.

I am good on money. The teaching is going great. I actually have to go to Ensendad today for a special training session. The bike is good although it squeaks a lot because there is a lot of polve (dust) in these pueblitios. How did Michelles date go? Will you send me wedding pictures? As for my address, dad the house actually doesn´t have one. If you can see the quartel of the 67 battalion we live on the side of the base that favors ensenada in yellow Apartments. As for the camera, it seems to be working okay now, I´ll let you know if it starts acting up again,

For Christmas I would love ties, MOTAB CD´s, New Shirts, Garments, slippers, pull and seal envelopes and a portable hard drive to upload all my photos, and maybe a super sweet camera.

I have to go and get on the bus love you all and FELICIDADES LIZ AND JAKE.

Love, Elder Baria

P.S. I sent a card to Jake. I hope you all get it soon.

November 1st 2010

He mentions to send all letters and packages to his original mission address so if you are sending letters to him please keep that in mind.

My companion and I contacted yesterday in a place called La Chapala. It was a village of abandoned houses. The people that do live there don’t have electricity or water. I thought it would be so awesome to live in a place of complete serenity.

As for experiences of the week, my companion had the worst week finding people of our entire missions. We worked our butts off and nothing. The President said that since the announcement of the temple numbers in the missionary work have come crashing down even though we work as hard or harder than ever.

Michelle-The last letter I got was awhile ago. I don’t know if you have sent some recently. As for my companion he and I are good. We are friends, and the sector is beautiful and tough. Oh I actually dropped out of the AP class of Mrs. Weston because I did not like her way of teaching, though no extra credit would be gained. I really enjoyed my other teacher. I would love to see the song you wrote.

Liz-YOUR GONNA BE A BRIDE AND SOON A MOM!!!!!! I am so happy for you!

Song of the month “I Don’t Speak Americano”

Please send Beware of Pride-Ezra Taft Benson, recipe for Chicken Divan and enchiladas, brownies and fudge. Dad all packages would go to the mission address. Can you send me list of cool places to visit close to San Quintin? And could you please send a little bit of money.

Will send list next week! Out of time got to go!

Con amor,

Elder Baria

October 18th 2010

At this point in his mission, Ben was transferred to a little town called San Quintin. As many of you know at this past General Conference it was announced that a temple was to be built in Tijuana Mexico. That was very exciting for him and all the other members, leaders, and missionaries in that area. I really like that letter from his Mission President because it is so true. Any time we as individuals, or as a people, take a step in the right direction, Satan is always there to try and bring us down. That is why it is so important that we focus on what is really important in our lives and cling to our standards and our beliefs. We can't get discouraged or stop trying because it might be harder that we had originally anticipated. We must renew and strengthen our resolve to live righteous lives. You know revenge is frowned upon because we are supposed to love our enemies? Well, Satan is our enemy and he tries his hardest to get us to sin and go against what we know is right. To get "revenge" on Satan all we have to do is choose the right. Throw right back into his face everything he tempts us with by saying "no", or in some cases saying "yes." Say no to seeing that inappropriate movie. Turn off the song when you feel uncomfortable. Say yes to reading your scriptures. Say yes to going to seminary, but go ahead and say yes to the snooze buttons a couple of times:) Hey, we aren't perfect; all the Lord asks of us is to always be striving.

Alright starting off with the answers to the questions San Quintin is amazing it is a promised land, my companion is a really sentimental guy and is totally awesome and we are pumped to work here, the work is awesome and way different, the branch has between 120 and 140 members that go every week and the church is about to start building a chapel for the branch so all the members are super excited. The last Elder here finished his mission here so didn´t leave too much but that is perfect becasue my companion and I are going to start working in another area about 30 minutes away. My sector extends fro Manadero until Lazaro Cardenas. The Spanish here is a little different there are a lot of people that dont speak Spanish, and speak dialects, they also say Los Globos instead of Sobreduelas. The Elders don´t do to much in the branch leadership. And yes I did get the package my last day in Pinos and my comapnion got the pen after I left. I hope Michelle posted to the people that that direction now won´t work for me it is now back to the old mission address. I did buy the bike 700 pesos and then 100 pesos for a seat.
Fun Story of San Quintin there is a Mormon Polygamist colony in me sector on the maps it shows up as Los Molinos but here it is know as Zarahemla. And it is forbidden to contact there, think about living in Utah before Wilford Woodruff and thats what it is like. As for other news there is problem with the Camera, I don´t know how to describe it but it pretty much donesn´t take picturess anymore becasue the screeen stops working. As for fun scriptures DandC 31-3-5, 50.23,1 Tim 4.12, and for dad Alma 30.7-that if you know a law is unjust and dont do anything the sin falls on your head as well.

As for things I need could you all send me in email maps of all the peuplitos close by and ideas for games in a noche de hogar. And share with me your expericens of how keeping the Sabbath Day holy has been a blessing in your life.

I love you all till Next Week,
Love, Elder Baria

Letter from the Mission President

Estimados Elderes y Hermanas:

Presidente Heyn

For those of you who aren't fluent in Spanish, here is the English translation:

Dear Elders and Sisters:

We like all members of the Mission are very happy with the announcement of the Temple. The temple will be a great blessing to the lives of members but also for all inhabitants of Baja California Norte, Sur and Sonora.

With this in mind there is also someone who is not happy with this announcement: Yes, Satan the enemy of all righteousness and truth.

We have seen a substantial decline in the numbers and baptisms of the mission. In speaking with the missionaries we have observed that all are working hard and striving to meet to designate a key, getting new ones every day and bringing new people to church every week.

This tells me that Satan is now working hard to prevent people from progressing and be baptized. He knows that those who are baptized will now be the first to enter the temple when it is dedicated.

For this reason we can not discouraged or let Satan gain ground. We have to work harder than ever. We have to make a human effort to meet key indicators and maintain our approach of a baptism every week for fellowship and stay spiritually worthy, through obedience, the daily study, prayer and sincere desire to do the things that Heavenly Father we require.

Let us show God that He is not wrong when we call this mission at this time. We are here now because he trusts us and knows that we will not gain from Satan. We will give everything we have to find the elect and maintain the converts who come into His Holy House.

Live worthy of this beautiful time when we were called.

With love,

President Heyn
